Scrap Collage
This project celebrates creativity and expression, but it also emphasises the importance of avoiding creative excess. The main message is that design, for design's sake, is no longer enough; there must be a valid reason for things to exist, and disruptive processes often lead to the best innovations.
As sustainability becomes a top priority, brands and consumers are looking to use every last scrap with a no-waste approach. This trend taps into the consumer repair economy, upcycling deadstock and waste materials and creating new pattern mixes from leftover cut-outs. Get ready to unleash your imagination and embrace sustainable surrealism.
Project Outcome
In the "Scrap Collage" project, students explored sustainable fashion by challenging traditional design approaches and addressing environmental issues like fabric waste. They focused on creating meaningful designs that prioritise sustainability over excess, embracing the concept of using every scrap of material. Inspired by the "Scrap Collage" trend, students learned techniques such as upcycling, radical recycling, and DIY (Do It Your Way) to craft a felt bag from fabric waste. The project encouraged creativity through surreal patterns and sustainable design practices. Students also developed their fashion communication skills by planning and producing a photo shoot to showcase their DIYW bag.
