Recognising a character or a story in the details of a garment attracts a consumer immediately before they even decide whether they truly like the garment in full. When storytelling in fashion is done right, it opens up a whole world of creativity. Just like timeless stories, fashion can create influences, characteristics and illustrate certain values to escape the mundane. Clothes can become the door for an audience to experience alternate realities. Where there is fantasy there can be fashion.

This project in most of its parts is about reinvention, interpretation and storytelling using fashion as your platform. This time, it is your turn to put a spin on something beautifully written, endlessly reinterpreted one stitch at a time.

Project Outcome

In the "Romeo & Juliet" project, students explored storytelling through fashion by using Shakespeare's famous play as inspiration. They researched the story, highlighted favourite quotes, and watched the 1996 film adaptation to gather ideas for their designs. Each student customised a fabric panel for a secret garment using techniques like embroidery, sewing, applique, and embellishment. The project emphasised personal interpretation of the story, encouraging creativity and narrative expression through fabric. The panels were then sewn together to form a cohesive garment, showcasing how storytelling in fashion can create emotional connections and bring clothing to life with meaningful narratives.
