Storytelling Through Music

Particularly in the video game industry, music helps players immerse in the experience. In order to do so, the industry itself lends to musicians who love to experiment with composition in a non-linear way and adapt to what they see, rather than following a structure that people are used to hearing.

In this project, you will be stepping behind the screen into the role of a composer and sound designer for the video game industry.

Project Outcome

In the "Ready, Player, Start" project, students explored the role of music and sound design in the video game industry. They learned how music enhances storytelling and player immersion by adding pace, conveying emotions, and shaping the gaming experience. As aspiring composers and sound designers, students deconstructed a video game cutscene of their choice to analyse its sound elements. They experimented with digital composition, songwriting, and recording techniques to create a piece of music that complemented their chosen scene. The project emphasised non-linear music composition, character-building, and scene-making, providing insight into the creative process behind video game music.
