How we safeguard the children and young people we work with.
We in This is Creative Enterprise (TICE) are committed to a practice, which protects children from harm. Staff, mentors and volunteers in this organisation accept and recognise our responsibilities to develop awareness of issues, which cause children and young people harm.
OUR DEFINITIONS
Safeguarding is the responsibility that an organisation has to ensure that their employees and volunteers, partners, operations and programmes do no harm to children, young people or vulnerable adults (together referred to as ‘vulnerable people’ under this policy); that they do not expose them to the risk of discrimination, neglect, harm and abuse; and that any concerns the organisation has about the safety of vulnerable people within the communities in which they work, are dealt with and reported to the appropriate authorities. It is also the responsibility that the organisation has for protecting its employees and volunteers when they are vulnerable, for example, when ill or at risk of harm or abuse.
Child protection is a central part of but not separate to safeguarding. It is the process of protecting individual children identified as either suffering or at risk of significant harm as a result of abuse or programme of work. It also includes measures and structures designed to prevent and respond to abuse. Over recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the way in which children, young people and vulnerable adults can be at risk of discrimination, neglect, abuse and exploitation by those who are in positions of trust and power over them, including through international development activities. As a consequence, there has been a significant increase in the efforts made by development organisations to ensure that no harm results from the contact their employees, volunteers and other representatives have with their target populations or communities.
AT THIS IS CREATIVE ENTERPRISE C.I.C (TICE):
We will endeavour to safeguard children and young people by adopting child protection guidelines through a code of behaviour for staff and volunteers:
We are also committed to reviewing our policy and good practice at regular intervals.
THE AIMS OF THIS POLICY ARE:
This is Creative Enterprise recognise that some children may be especially vulnerable to abuse. Additional barriers can exist, for example, when recognising abuse and neglect for children with Special Educational Needs.
DBS
The Disclosure and Barring Service helps employers make safer recruitment decisions each year by processing and issuing DBS checks for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
The main aim of the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is to help employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. Staff recruitment procedures must comply with the DBS and This is Creative Enterprise must pass on information to the DBS when an individual is dismissed, or an individual resigns, because they harmed or may harm a child or a vulnerable adult.
This is Creative Enterprise carries out Enhanced DBS checks (previously known as CRB checks) that result in certificates being issued to an individual. This is Creative Enterprise requests to see this certificate to ensure that we are recruiting suitable people into our organisation.
All TICE Staff and volunteers hold an Enhanced DBS certificate.

SHARING INFORMATION ABOUT CHILD PROTECTION AND GOOD PRACTICE WITH, CHILDREN, STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS
Good communication is essential in any organisation. In 'This is Creative Enterprise' every effort will be made to assure that, should individuals have concerns, they will be listened to and taken seriously. It is the responsibility of the management to ensure that information is available to and exchanged between all those involved in this organisation and its activities. Some information is confidential and should only be shared on a strictly need-to-know basis.
Children and young people
Children and young people have a right to information, especially any information that could make life better and safer for them. 'This is Creative Enterprise' will act to ensure they have information about how, and with whom, they can share their concerns, complaints and anxieties. When sharing information, 'This is Creative Enterprise' personnel will be sensitive to the level of understanding and maturity, as well as to the level of responsibility, of the people with whom they are sharing.
Confidentiality
We recognise that all matters relating to child protection are confidential. The School's (Child Protection Liasion Officers) CPLOs will disclose any information about a child to other members of staff on a need to know basis only. TICE will only share information about a child with adults who have parental responsibility, or where a parent/guardian with parental responsibility has given written permission to do so, or where it is necessary in order to safeguard the child from harm. All TICE staff and mentors are aware that TICE has a professional responsibility to share information with other agencies in order to safeguard children. All schools and any other identified individuals at TICE must be aware that they cannot promise a child to keep secrets which might compromise the child’s safety or wellbeing.
Responsibilities and reporting procedures
Schools and This is Creative Enterprise have joint responsibility for ensuring effective implementation of this policy. In addition, all TICE staff have an individual responsibility to comply both with the spirit and wording of this policy. This is Creative Enterprise CIC should be contacted immediately under any of the following circumstances:
Allegations against staff
PHOTOGRAPHING AND VIDEOING
There has been a lot of controversy about adults photographing and filming young people and the concerns are genuine. We have taken a sensible and balanced approach. This is Creative Enterprise acknowledges that the majority of people who take or view photographs or videos of children do so for entirely innocent, understandable and acceptable reasons. Sadly, some people abuse children through taking or using images. To help protect children and young people, we will implement the following safeguards:
TICE photographs that are for use outside of TICE (for example a press shot) are anonymous or give the first name only unless specific permission has been received from parents. Any photographs taken from TICE activities that feature children and that will be used by TICE, whether these are on or off-site, need to be taken with guidance and sign-off parents/guardians. Parents’ and Carers must consent to TICE taking photographs by signing a Model Release Form.
SOCIAL NETWORKING
THE USE OF MOBILE PHONES AND PERSONAL DEVICES
ONLINE SAFETY
This is Creative Enterprise will continue to provide a safe environment, including online. Where students are using computers in school, or in venues appropriate supervision will be in place. This may include:
CHILDREN AND ONLINE SAFETY AWAY FROM SCHOOL
It is important that all staff who interact with children, including online, continue to look out for signs a child may be at risk. Any such concerns should be dealt with as per the Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy and where appropriate referrals should still be made to children’s social care and as required, the police.
Online delivery should follow the same principles as set out in the organisation’s code of conduct. TICE will ensure any use of online learning tools and systems is in line with privacy and data protection/GDPR requirements.
DATA MANAGEMENT
Data is essential to our business processes and is fundamental to our decision making activities. The data generated and held by the organisation are key assets that must be managed correctly to underpin TICE's strategic development, operational activities, essential functions and business integrity. Everyone has a responsibility to look after TICE's data and abide by this policy, all applicable laws and specifically the Data Protection Act. Mismanagement of data by students, staff or others may lead to fines, reputational damage, and negative operational or financial consequences.
All programme and project information is held on our database. For youth data, the name and address and, where provided, school, email address, date of birth is stored.
PARENTS & GUARDIANS
Parents/persons with parental responsibility are ultimately responsible for their children's welfare at all times, and they should be assured that their children are involved with a credible organisation.
STAFF & VOLUNTEERS
As an organisation, which offers support and guidance to children and young people, it is imperative that each member of the TICE staff is aware of their responsibilities under the Child Protection legislation and has a working knowledge of TICE's procedures. Each member of staff will receive updated training in Safeguarding & Child Protection.
OTHER BODIES
A copy of our Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy will be made available to any other appropriate body.
